Back in 2006, NECA experienced upheaval in the line of leadership succession. Our honoree came to the rescue, first doing a return stint on the Board of Directors as Vice President and then by serving as President in 2007 and 2008.
Well known for his generosity, positive outlook, sense of humor... as well as his sense of style... he was the right person at a time when we really needed a lift. During his presidency, NECA experienced it largest membership ever and healthy participation in all of our activities. Even serving on the Board was more fun as we shifted our meetings away from staid and boring hotel Board rooms, to locations more conducive to creative thinking and developing working relationships among Board members. He took some Board meetings on the road to NH and RI to dispel any notion that the leadership was a closed clique, attracting new members and potential leaders. One of our most memorable summer Board meetings was held poolside at his home.
Our honoree consistently donates his time and money to raising funds for the NECA scholarship program and our annual golf outing charity recipient. He is well-known for his generosity in his community as well. His company's washes often team with non-profits to help them fundraise, and he enthusiastically supported NECA's Wash for a Cause program, helping to initiate some of the most successful fund raising campaigns.
On a serious note, his company is a recognized leader in Massachusetts on employing those with physical and/or intellectual disabilities, and is committed to comprising 20% of its workforce with individuals who are intellectually and developmentally disabled. They have exceeded their goal!
So, don't let his light-hearted demeanor fool you. Our honoree is a serious businessman, a partner in his family's 40+ year retail convenience store/gasoline, and carwash group that operates 26 facilities in Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. He is well-known for incorporating a wide variety of creative profit centers at the company's very attractive facilities. With his younger brother Leo, they have been expanding at the rate of 2 locations per year and now have more than 250 employees on staff. And through all this, he find time to pursue his love for biking, horseback riding, travel and good food ... and recently, quality bourbon.
After decades as a member, he enthusiastically attends and supports all things NECA, adding an element of fun. Many of you have worn the goofy hats he provided or posed with the cut-outs of presidential candidates for photos at our golf outings thanks to him. You've seen him disguised as a race car driver, vision-limiting helmet and all, at a Table Top Show to promote our F-1 event.
For those years of support, and all the good times he has created,
YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN PAUL VERCOLLONE.
