How well do you know the law?

"Staying on the Right Side of the Law: Traps for the Unwary"

At NECA's Winter Dinner meeting, our guest speaker challenged the audience to identify all the possible employment wage, hour, tip and discrimination violations in an at outrageously over the top case study, "Storm Clouds Over Fairweather"  We challenged all who weren't in attendance to identify most of the 16 violations before taking a peek at the answers. To view the case study, "Stormclouds Over Fairweather" (click on the title).

Attorney Joel Sowalsky, (not pictured here!) a seasoned business and employment lawyer, educated and entertained us with a lively and interactive program. Using a creative fictional case study, followed by a boisterous “team-table” competition, Joel presented “Traps for the Unwary.” Our attendees learned how to avoid costly legal mistakes that can result in expensive litigation, government investigations, mandatory payments of back wages, penalties of double or treble damages, government fines and lawyers fees.  What you don’t know can hurt you!

Topics covered included:

  • Wage and hour laws
  • Overtime laws for hourly employees
  • Overtime for managers and supervisors
  • Tip laws
  • Sexual harassment
  • Sex discrimination
  • Religious discrimination
  • Progressive discipline
